Meet the Cast of Pride and Prejudice
Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy are the main characters of the novel: it’s Darcy’s Pride and Elizabeth’s prejudice that conflict throughout the novel, not to mention what gives it its name.
Mrs. Bennet is the mother of five whose “business of life was to get her daughters married.” Her manipulations and machinations are a source of comedy throughout the book.
Mr. Bennet is smart but not wealthy, and he has a lot of women in his life. He gets along best with his to his two oldest daughters, but the rest of the women he is bemused by.
Pride and Prejudice Begins
“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”
Thus the novel kicks off, with Charles Bingley, the wealthy dude, rents a house near the Bennets. At this point things get a bit hectic: One guy proposes and gets shined, then he runs off and marries another woman. One daughter runs off with a guy, but upsets her family when she doesn’t marry him fast enough. The whole time Mother Bennet doesn’t care who it is, as long as it’s a man, preferably with some money.
How Does Pride And Prejudice Work Out?
So, does Darcy see past the penury of Elizabeth, working through his pride and just letting love take over? This question has enabled Pride and Prejudice to stay at the top of the heap for two hundred years.
