If you live in the United States, I don’t need to tell you how expensive health care is. A Turkish friend of mine joked that it was cheaper to go to a doctor in Turkey even without health insurance. So it was more expensive even though the insurance covered most of the cost.

That’s why it is so important to budget your health if you live in the United States. You can plan ahead of time for each doctor appointment you make. When you select a hospital or medical facility, research whether it is within the network or outside the network of the coverage.

The same goes with emergency visits too. If you go to an emergency at a hospital outside of the insurance network, it will cost you a fortune. I have seen some people file bankruptcies based on their decision to go to a hospital. If you or your loved one can drive, you may even want to consider driving yourself. Hospitals tend to charge for the ambulance as well.

The reason why medical care is expensive in the United States is because most US hospitals heavily invest in expensive medical equipment. Also, doctors borrowed a lot of money early in their career and they have to pay back their debt. Finally, let’s not forget how much doctors and hospitals pay for the malpractice insurance. Since the US is a litigious country, people sue for no reason at all. That’s why doctors have to buy the insurance to protect themselves.

Where does that leave most US consumers? Most US consumers also pay a high cost for health insurance. This is because the population in the US is aging. As people age, their health-care needs rise and the costs go up. So the younger generation have to subsidize the insurance for the older generation.

In my case, I am a big fan of health savings account. While it does not lower your medical bills, it does have some tax advantages.
